Reunion website, Friends Reunited, is searching for faces from the gay and lesbian community to front its new advertising campaign encouraging members to 'come out' online.
The chosen individuals will appear on a banner next to the question, "Does he still think he's straight?" or "Does she still think she's straight?" in a bid to promote an alternative and unique way for people to declare their sexuality to old friends and colleagues by including an announcement in their personal profile.
The Friends Reunited campaign ties in with the annual national Pride celebrations beginning on June 18th and culminating in the Pride March through the streets of London on July 2nd.
Jon Clark, head of Friends Reunited, said: "We're looking for members who are proud to declare their sexuality and happy to encourage others to 'come out' online by appearing on the banner. It can be a tough task for some to let everyone know face to face, so writing it into their profile makes it easy and there's the added benefit of reaching all their old friends at once.
"We've already been contacted by gay members who have said that revealing their 'real' selves on the site has given them added confidence when attending reunions and also helped them reconcile their past self with their new out and proud self."
Founded by North London based husband and wife team Steve and Julie Pankhurst and their business partner Jason Porter, Friends Reunited was launched in July 2000 so that people could get in contact with their old school friends. A combination of word of mouth and immense media attention has propelled the site to phenomenon status, expanding beyond the school friends proposition to include workplaces, teams/clubs and streets. The site has over 12 million members, representing 43% of the adult internet population in the UK.
