THE LUCKIEST NAME IN LOVE

Making a connection between yourself and a pop hit makes you more popular

Snoop Dog, Paris Hilton, Fatboy Slim, Enrique Iglesias, Tamzin Outhwaite, Charlize Theron.

Each one proves that when it comes to being a magnet for the opposite sex, having a name that stands out from the crowd - to put it politely - is a winning strategy.

After all, look at Englebert Humperdinck. Would he have been surrounded by all those beautiful women if he'd stayed as plain old Arnold Dorsey?

But while it might be alright to go about with a name like Dido or Reese Witherspoon if you're rich and famous, what about the rest of us?

Which are the names that have more pulling power than others?

It's a real issue in the Internet age. With the sudden explosion in popularity of Web dating, choosing the right kind of profile name that will attract as many people as possible is a big poser.

When you're looking for love, it's a fine line between choosing something that will seem as exotic as Kirsten Dunst, and just choosing something that'll make you seem a right dunce.

Now help is at hand from the people who run the dating website at Friends Reunited.

They've managed to find the luckiest names in love, by rating the success of the different kinds of epithets their members choose - from Andy_41, Onlyanhonestguy and The-monk-with-the-funk, to 66pinkbutterfly, Katebspunkylady and PersianVase.

The Friends Reunited Dating team divided up the names that people choose under different types of category, such as a reference to a sport, a personality feature, physical attribute, date-of-birth etc - separately for men and women.

Then they worked out the average number of visitors that each name in the category gets.

The shock finding is that while using your own first name was the overwhelmingly popular first choice as a membername, people that chose a reference to a film or music star or hit instead got far more hits.

Women that referred to film or music in their membername - such as Bewitched1 and Cindersalive - get over twice as many hits on average as any other kind of name. For men using the same style - including Badly Drawn Man and La Bamba - the figure is around one-and-a-half times.

In contrast, using your first name will put you way down at eigth place in the popularity stakes if you're a girl, and fifth place if you're a boy.

Another surprising result is that the name next most likely to get lots of interest for a woman is one that conjures up happy days or romantic nights, such as Sky_blue2uk and Moonwind61.

Whereas men that choose to think of themselves as an animal are the second biggest hit with the ladies, such as Bulldog12 and Tiger40.

Those who aren't feeling very creative or inspired shouldn't be too worried though, because even using a name that looks like the result of a fight in a Scrabble factory (eg. Vivrunshotncold (female) or Kjayf (male) will at least put you in the Top Ten. Such gobbledegook names get an average of 172 hits for women and 57 hits for men.

However, chaps should be warned that while using your online name to boast about your personality (like The Funmeister has done) is good at wowing the fairer sex, boasting about body parts just doesn't seem to rate at all.

On the other hand, it clearly pays to make the most of your physical appearance if you're a woman, with those following the example of Smilingeyes66 recording an average of 257 hits.

Rhoda Breakell, head of romance at Friends Reunited Dating said, "One of the reasons for the sudden surge in popularity of Internet dating is because people are beginning to realise that you can get to know someone before that crucial first date.

"That's why profile names are even more important than photographs, because they tell you in an instant how a potential love interest likes to think of themselves.

"They also give an indication of how creative, upbeat, sensible or wacky they are.

"There is no doubt about it that linking yourself to your favourite movie star or a pop artist is by far and away the most successful way to spark interest.

"It looks like most Brits are much happier judging someone by their tastes in films and songs than by any other measure - including physical appearance."
